"Rumpi SDG 6: Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene are Essential to Know"

Of course, we will not immediately move on to discuss SDG 6, but gradually we will strengthen the foundation of our understanding by mentioning a little about how the SDGs were formed and what their contents are.

Friend Curious, are you familiar with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? It is a common thing that we often encounter this term, especially in every theme of activity, from seminars, and conferences, to competitions, from regional, national, to international levels, from government activities to the private sector, all of whom adopt the term SDGs as a form of their efforts in grounding and realizing the values of the SDGs in the community.

The SDGs era started in 2015 when it was ratified at the Rio+20 Conference, replacing the previous global goals known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which totalled eight main objectives. SDGs became an international agreement under the United Nations (UN) which involved the most prominent participants in history, as many as 8.5 - 10 million (very varied depending on the source) from all parts of the world.

Initially, as many as 300 drafts were intended to develop the SDGs. Through a process of negotiation and prioritization, in the end, 17 main points of sustainable goals were successfully formulated, one of which was SDG 6, "Ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all," which contains eight targets with 11 global indicators which Bappenas then develops into 29 national indicators.

So what is the importance of SDG 6? Two main points need attention regarding SDG 6: "Water" and "Sanitation."

To make things easier, let me invite Curious Friends to reflect on each other's daily lives while answering the following fundamental questions.

"Have you ever had nothing for a whole day to drink?" "What is the total number of your daily water activities?" "Is it comfortable holding bowel movements due to poor quality and access to toilets?" "There is a restaurant that doesn't have a sink at all. Are you going to visit there?" How about here? Even though it's not explicitly stated, you must feel the importance of Water and Sanitation in our daily life, especially for cleanliness and health. Some of the conditions previously mentioned are still often experienced in urban environments. Then what about in rural areas?

Percentage of Types of Water on Earth (ROFA Education Center)

The data presented by WWF states that of the total water on earth, 97.5% is salt water, and the remaining 2.5% is freshwater, whereas, of the 2.5% per cent, less than 1% can be utilized directly by the community, based on the narrative of Ragil Satriyo Gumilang, Senior Communication and Policy Officer of Wetlands Indonesia.

If we are just a little wrong in the use and management of water, then the world's population could be threatened, and we must be aware that we are currently in this condition.

Data Availability Status (Bappenas)

Even more interesting, this condition is still haunted by the fact that in Indonesia, the data availability for SDG 6 itself is still very minimal, considering its position in the third lowest rank before SDG 13 and 7, which ranks the most bass for data availability. Of course, we know that the lack of data results in chaos in problem-solving strategies.

In addition, the report on SDG 6 Indonesia (2019)states that of the 29 national indicators, only 12 have good status while the rest, namely 8 have bad status, 2 are moderate, and 7 are not predicted. In addition, it was also mentioned that two national indicators need special attention, namely indicator 6.1.1. (a) on access to adequate drinking water sources and indicator 6.2.1. (b) on access to proper sanitation services. It's a condition where we can conclude that our work is still far from finished.

“Although we take it for granted, sanitation is a physical measure that has probably done more to increase human life span than any kind of drug or surgery.” ~ Deepak Chopra
